International Shifting from India: A Step-by-Step Planning Guide

Build your overseas move around the route, inventory and receiving arrangements. Packing, transport and border formalities need to fit together before collection.

Before you get started

  • Start with route, circumstances and inventory.
  • Confirm responsibilities at origin and destination.
  • Keep documents and receiving arrangements current.

Start with the destination and your circumstances

Record the origin city in India, destination country and city, expected travel period and when the destination property becomes available. Explain whether you are relocating, studying, returning home or making another move. These circumstances can affect the questions the destination representative needs to ask.

Do not book solely around a flight date. Your belongings may follow a different schedule, and receipt may depend on documents or a suitable delivery address. Start with International Shifting and share the actual route before assuming a particular service is available.

Create an inventory before requesting a quotation

List furniture, appliances, cartons and special items room by room. Separate what will travel with you, what may be shipped and what will remain. Identify fragile surfaces, large pieces, batteries, food, outdoor equipment and anything needing a destination acceptance check.

Include approximate sizes and photographs where helpful. A household size alone does not describe the volume or packing needs. Read the international inventory guide and update the list when you add or remove goods so the quote and shipment remain consistent.

Confirm the work at both ends

Ask who handles collection, export packing, transport arrangements, customs-related coordination and destination delivery. Identify which services are included and which require a separate representative or payment. A door-to-door description still needs an exact scope, receiving address and access discussion.

Clarify stairs, lifts, vehicle restrictions and any unpacking or reassembly work. Establish one recognised booking contact and the destination contact where applicable. Record proposed dates and distinguish an estimate from an expressly confirmed commitment.

Review border and document questions early

Obtain a checklist for your circumstances and destination before collection. Ask who checks the inventory, declarations and authorisations and who files any required application. Do not assume that describing goods as used household effects guarantees tax relief or unrestricted admission.

For example, GOV.UK’s personal belongings guidance explains that duties or taxes can apply and that transfer-of-residence relief has conditions. It is an example of why destination rules must be checked, not a rule for every country. Use the documents guide for your preparation questions.

Choose transport and packing together

Discuss air or sea options that are actually available for the route and goods. Compare the complete movement, including packing, local legs, handling, clearance-related work and delivery. A quoted airport or port stage is not necessarily the full time or cost until your home receives the goods.

Planning pointWhat to confirm
InventoryAccepted items and final package records
PackingProtection and any specialist treatment
TransportMode, route and proposed schedule
Border formalitiesResponsible parties and required records
DestinationRelease, access and delivery scope

Read air versus sea freight and discuss optional insurance separately from the handling plan.

Keep a receiving plan and complete the handover

Give the authorised recipient the package inventory and condition record. Confirm availability and address access before dispatch, then update the team if circumstances change. At delivery, reconcile packages, record visible discrepancies and note inspection limits accurately.

  • Route and destination circumstances are clear.
  • Inventory and restricted items are reviewed.
  • Documents and responsibilities are assigned.
  • Costs and included services are understood.
  • Recipient and delivery access are confirmed.

Use the international moving checklist and request a move-specific quotation. Keep passports, essential documents and immediate-use items under your control rather than burying them in the shipment.

Common questions

Can I arrange transport before my final address is available?

Explain what is provisional and agree when the address and receiving arrangements must be confirmed.

Are used household goods always duty-free?

No. Eligibility and declarations depend on the destination and your circumstances.

Can I ship every item from my home?

Review the inventory, origin and destination rules, and carrier acceptance before packing.

What should I send in the first enquiry?

Origin and destination, inventory, approximate sizes, preferred timing, access and any known documentation questions.
